Letters from Mrs. Spicknall's Third Grade Class

Captain Joe visited Mrs. Spicknall's third grade class on February 6, 2002 presenting a video of the Cosmos Adventure.   The following letters were received from the students:

Dear Captain Joe Dorr,

Your presentation was great last week and I learned a lot from you, Captain Joe Dorr.  You gave the best presentation ever in the world.  Thank you Captain Joe Dorr.  I loved your presentation and you must have met a lot of people and I did not know where the Cook Islands were and what you did before you got over to the Cook Islands over the Pacific Ocean.  Thank you for the best presentation ever!

Sincerely,

Lindsey A.

Dear Captain Joe,

Your presentation was awesome!  I thought it was going to be boring but how you got to sail across the ocean and visit places was probably exciting.  I liked the movie you showed of the islands you visited.  How close was the Panama Canal to South America?  My stepdad likes to keep track of world sailboat races and that's why I asked that question.  Were you scared when you traveled over the Cook Island Trench because it was too deep?  I think you are brave for sailing over the ocean.  Thank you for sparing your time in our class.

Sincerely,

Ryan D.

Dear Captain Joe,

Last week you came to our class.  I just wanted to thank you for coming to our class.  I liked it.  I learned where the Cook Islands are.  What is the longest time you have traveled?

Sincerely,

Jacqueline S.

Dear Captain Joe,

I loved your presentation.  You taught me a lot about boats.  My grandfather has a boat and I've been on it.  I get sea sick though.  My mom would love your exciting presentation.  My favorite thing you taught us was that you could get close to the iguanas without making them run away and I did not know there were so many of them on the Galapagos Islands.  Hope you can come again and teach us some more.

Special Thanks,

Rachel W,

Dear Captain Joe,

You presentation was sensational!  I was amazed that a squid got into the Cosmos!  I'm glad you showed us all the wonderful animals you got to see.  But I have one question:  Why are you sailing across the world?   Write back if you can!

From,

Hank

Dear Captain Joe,

Your presentation was so cool.  I liked your little model boat.  I like how it stood on the little stand.  I loved your movie.  I like that island that you went to, it was beautiful.  I also liked it when we took that little test and folded it up and put it in the basket and you picked one and it was Bryce's and she won that cool t-shirt.  I liked that t-shirt.  I learned that your boat can take water in and it would lift over the big hills.  I thought the boat would sink but it didn't.  It was interesting when your friend jumped in the water.  I would be scared to death to jump off the boat.  Those iguanas were weird looking.  The are so different from the iguanas that live here.   I'd still like to know how long it would take to sail around the whole earth?

Your Friend,

Shaun Michael K.

Dear Captain Joe,

I thought your presentation was awesome!  I would like to know how were the oceans?  Were they deep, shallow, clear, or could you see through the oceans?  I liked your presentation very much because I got to learn about things like strange animals on Galapagos.  I thank you for presenting to us.

Sincerely,

Danielle B.

Dear Captain Joe Dorr,

Your presentation was fabulous!  I liked when we saw the movie and we got to see the porpoise and the baby squid.  My dad would have loved your visit to our class because he used to be in the Coast Guard and never sailed where the Cosmos sailed.  When you got to the Cook Islands was it kind of like an adventure?  I didn't understand the part when you stood in front of the class and said that somebody gets their name printed on a t-shirt or a hat?

Question:  Why did you want to go on this trip?

Special Thanks,

Bryce K.

Dear Captain Joe Dorr,

Thank you for visiting.  The presentation was great.  What I liked best is the part when you went scuba diving and when you were on the motorcycles and when you got close to the iguanas.

Sign,

Zachary B.

P.S.  When is your next visit?

Dear Captain Joe,

I liked your presentation because we got to watch a movie about your trip.  And we got to ask you questions about your trip.  And then we had to answer questions from you and whoever got them all right and got their name picked out of the basket got a t-shirt.  What I learned was that you could have more fun on a boat traveling than a car or a plane.  Thank you for coming.

Sincerely,

Mark

Dear Captain Joe Dorr,

Your presentation was great!  What I want to know is how long does it take to get from Australia to the Great Lakes?  I was amused that there are weird animals at Galapagos.  And thanks for your presentation.

From,

Erik

Dear Captain Joe,

Your presentation on Wednesday was great.  I learned so many things.  I learned how to make electricity on a boat!  I also learned what kind of animals live in Central America.  That's what I learned on your presentation.

Sincerely,

Andrew

Dear Captain Joe,

Thank you for coming to our school.  I really liked your presentation.  I thought it was cool.  I liked when you showed us the movie and talked about all the animals you had seen.  THANK YOU!!!

From

Kelly

Dear Captain Joe,

You did the most awesome presentation I have ever seen in my whole entire life!  I liked the part in the movies you made where you showed the animal in the show and when you took a picture when you were under the boat.   I did not like it because you did not show many pictures of animals.  I hope you can come again.

Sincerely,

Cody H.

Dear Captain Joe,

Thank you for coming in last Wednesday and doing your presentation.  I really liked it a lot.  I liked it when you showed us the video of you and your crew travelling all around the world.  My favorite part of the movie was the people dancing at the hotel.  And I liked all of the information you gave us about boats and the sea.

Dear Captain Joe Dorr,

I liked your presentation.  I liked the part where you saw dolphins.  They are my favorite animal.  Is it fun traveling the world?  When you saw the iguanas, where did you see iguanas in what country?   I learned that you have a sailboat.  Why did you want to go away so far from home?  I think you saw the iguanas in Ecuador because iguanas are in Ecuador.  I went to Ecuador.  I saw iguanas in a park everywhere.  They were crawling everywhere tree to tree.

Sincerely,

Jessica A.

Dear Captain Joe Dorr,

I loved the presentation!  What I liked most was when you and your friend saw the sharks under water!  What was your favorite part?  Also what if you ran out of gasoline and your sail broke?  What if you ran out of canned food?  So thank you for using your spare time.

Sincerely,

Peter

P.S.  Will you write back?

Dear Captain Joe,

Your Cosmos show was awesome!  I learned lots of things from your visit.  One thing was you saw a bluefooted bird!  I was going to say you had too many notions!  My little brother would have loved your show because he loves sailboats and you brought a mini one!  My older brother, Leland, would have thought your show was cool because of the view of the camera on the video was funny, especially in the little mini boat because your Cosmos went under water too far.   I thought it was funny when I saw you guys jumping off the rope and into the water.   I also liked your show because at the end we had a test.  I got all the answers right.  I learned that a sailboat had a rope to make the sails move.

Some of my questions didn't get answered and I would like to know the answer.  My first question was:  Where are you going next?  My second one is:  Why did you want to go sailing?

Thank You!!!!!

Rebecca B.

Dear Captain Joe Dorr,

I liked your presentation so much, it was awesome.  I was so interested I still have not forgot it yet. And I liked when we watched the movie.  And when you guys jumped and swung.  But I had one question?   How come your boat has two hulls on the bottom and other boats don't?

Sincerely,

Katelyn V.

Dear Captain Joe,

Thank you very much for coming to our class & tell us about your journey on the Cosmos.  I really, really, really enjoyed it.   But I would like to know if you really had fun on your trip.  What I thought was interesting was that it took a lot of time and a lot of places to go to and to take so much time to go and to get back and I bet if I did something like that it would be very, very, very fun and interesting.  And do you remember what that blue footed bird was because I think I know what it was.  It might have been a blue footed booby.   Well that's all I wanted to say.

Sincerely,

Daniel

Dear Captain Joe,

I think your presentation was great!  I like how you showed us the water map (chart).  I told my brother about everything.  He was interested in it.  There's one question I forgot to ask you:  What kind of sea animals did you see in the water when you were under water?  Anyway I really liked your presentation.  I like to hear about it because I've never been on a big boat like that.  Thank you for showing all that stuff.

Sincerely,

Megan B.

Dear Captain Joe Dorr,

I really enjoyed your presentation!  And I thought it was pretty wild when you told us about the bird with blue feet.  My brother Nicholas would probably like to see one since his favorite color is blue!   And when you showed us the tape, I wondered what it would be like to live on an island, or even spend a week there, to see iguanas piled on top of each other in the sun everywhere.  And I thought that it would be weird to have squid just jump up onto my boat!  Or even have porpoises follow my boat, but it would be nice to see them, because they are so pretty!  And I still want to know how many islands you have gone around, and there names.  And if you could come back, pretty please bring another tape.  I want to see any other animals that you've seen because I really enjoyed the ones you already showed us on the tape.  And I also want to see the islands!

Your Friend,

Jessica L.

Dear Captain Joe Dorr,

I thought your presentation was awesome because you brought a video in.  The video was very long.  I liked it because you went to different islands.  I didn't like the lizards.  I also liked the part when you told us different islands you went to and when you gave us the questions we had to answer.  How many islands have you gone to?  I've never gone to a island before.   The longest trip I've ever took was when I went to Florida.  What was your longest trip?

Sincerely

Kelsey B.
