Message 157 07-01-2002 01:24 PM ET (US) Hi Joe and crew: Have returned from my visit to the UK and Aaron. His surprise to me was a weekend in Paris. We took the train through the chunnel and arrived on a blue-sky, fleecy cloud day. We sampled great French food (wait til you hear about our registered duck!!), strolled the Champs Elysees, people-watched as we sipped coffee at several sidewalk cafes, and saw all the famous sites. Couldn't have been lovelier. In fact, every day in London was also mild and clear. Now home again and dragging in our sweltering, 90plus temp. Your flowers are perfuming all the rooms of our house; what a stunning anniversary gift. You know how I love all those blossoms. Happy anniversary to you too, Joe. Came across some lines by T.S. Eliot, in the "Four Quartets." They are: "And the end of all our exploring/ Will be to arrive where we started/And know the place for the first time." There is much more in this poem that is equally profound and appropriate to your endeavor. We'll read it together when you come safely home to "where you started." Loving you ever, e

Hello Elke,
The story of your visit to Aaron, London and Paris sounded wonderful. Very happy you enjoyed the flowers. Sorry I could not deliver them myself.
Thank you for the quote from the “Four Quartets.” I am amazed, amazed. While you were posting the quote, I was on passage in the Indian Ocean. You and I were absolutely as far away as two people can be on Earth but having similar thoughts that trace directly to the philosophy of Heraclitus, who we have never before discussed. Your quote and my first line are attributable to Heraclitus’ “everything is in flux” philosophy. The Norton Anthology of Poetry” that we have in the Cosmos Library has footnoted references to Heraclitus in the footnotes of the Four Quartets. During the passage I studied the philosophers and, thought it was time to explain (at least to myself) why I am making this circumnavigation. I attribute the following, “ever changing” directly to the philosopher. Here is the explanation that I wrote.
Cosmos In Blue
Is all one, ever changing? Let it pass. But not me. I’m going sailing
To see Before going
Full circle On home.
I intend more meanings for this writing than there are words in the thing. But it is my poor construction and therefore I will be the only one that can make any sense out of my own words. None the less, I intend to the Webmaster to post this somewhere on the web site as my explanation of why I am. (please Tom).
Love ever growing and changing, Joe

I'm visiting with Karen and her beautiful brood of three today and getting all kinds of mommy advice. We've been busy checking out your web site and seeing what the latest is with the Cosomos crew. Emily and I are almost finished with painting the baby's room and Mike is starting to assemble the crib. Here's Karen
--wow....I am so excited for you and your journey around the world. Daph has filled me in on some of your adventures and I'm glad you get to experience this magical trip. Be safe and enjoy each day. Karen and Family.
Take care Dad!
Love,
Daphne
PS..I can't tell you how much Mom loved her anniversary bouquet and phone call!!

Response: Hello Daphne,
Hope all is well. I have no doubt that your home will be fully ready when he is to leave his present home. We are all missing our families here and looking forward to reunions but in the meantime, the web site does help us communicate.
Captain Dad
Hello Karen,
Glad to here you and Daphne were together. I am sure that your advice to Daphne was excellent and that among other things, you reminded her (as I told her so many times in her youth) that the bowline is the king of knots.
The trip is magical because every place that we stop is the best place we have ever been, except for home.

Message 155 06-30-2002 09:33 PM ET (US) Hello Joe, So jealous of your many adventures, I've decided to take off on one of my own. Joining Kerith in Costa Rica tomorrow. She has been there staying with a Costa Rican family for the last 5 weeks and taking Spanish for 4 hours a day. Now we are going to do a little traveling from the central region to the Pacific Coast. Will be thinking of you as we listen to the pounding waves. Love, Jan
|
Response: Jan, Make sure Kerith knows that most of the medical terms are directly from Latin. You might save her a lot of trouble. It would be a shame if she gave up on her MD because she had a little trouble with Spanish. I know, because I intended to become a veterinarian but took Spanish 101 two times and then became a business major because I couldn’t face a third try. Thank goodness I wasn’t born in Spain. Don’t be jealous, sounds like you had a great adventure too. Hope you enjoyed your travels as much as we do. Love El Capitainie Jose.

-- Message 154 06-26-2002 09:25 PM ET (US) Greetings Cap't Joe and mates, I have just returned from Boston where I attended the national obstetrical nursing convention. I discovered on my evening stroll an interesting statue on Commonwealth Avenue of a mariner with the following inscription: Dream Dreams Then write them Aye, but live them first. You and your fellow travelers embody that spirit and courage on your round the world quest (I also think you will beat that guy in the hot air balloon as well). As for my sailing endeavors, I will go on my first SOS cruise 7/4-7/7 on the Chesapeake Bay. Signing off to go practice my knots. Peace & Love, Molly Kealy

Response: Hello Molly, I have been amazed at how our dreams can become our reality. That said, it is best to have good dreams. To me it has been almost as amazing to see how fast our writing makes it into the homes of so many friends. I am afraid that Steve Fawcett got there first. But we should always remember; the bowline is the king of knots. Captain Joe |
