One definition of cruising is, "Traveling on a boat from port to port in order to repair the boat." We have made a number of repairs on Cosmos. Of course we have had to make some repairs and adjustments on Cosmos, just like any other passage maker. Here is a list of some of those repairs since we left Fort Lauderdale. In our case, a few of these maintenance items have been completed in port, on anchor. The majority have, by necessity, been done while we were underway. Except for the one item that required special equipment that we do not have, the Cosmos Crew completed all repairs.

1. Refrigerator stopped cooling. Disassembled pump and cleaned and lubricated diaphragm.

2. Main halyard chaffed at masthead. Replaced Halyard.

3. Port engine water pump functioning poorly. Replaced impeller in pump.

4. Wind speed and direction indicator stopped functioning. Returned mast head anemometer to factory for rebuild and reinstalled rebuilt unit.

5. Boat speed gage stopped functioning. Brought down depth, wind boat speed and multi-meter. All four gages shipped to factory for rebuild and accelerated installation of Raytheon Fish Finder that also features speed, depth and log..

6. Circuit of three lights in kitchen failed. Still searching for fault.

7. Heavy smell of diesel fuel in port cabin. Traced source of fumes to electrical conduits from engine compartment that pass through cabin and sealed conduit opening in engine room.

8. Fourth light in kitchen failed. Replaced fixture.

9. Light fixture in starboard passageway failed. Replaced fixture.

10. Out haul broke five times. Made several modifications and installed anti-chafe gear.

11. Starboard head clogged. Diagnosed sediment buildup that reduced hose diameter and induced clogging, and replaced entire twenty-foot section of drain hose.

12. Rudder shaft steering arm bolts detached and broke. Reground shaft steering-arms and fabricated and installed larger bolts (work completed by Paul Jauncey, Ship Doctor).

13. Saloon table cabinet pounded to point of self-destruction. Removed table; disassembled cabinet and remounted part of table on used pedestal.

14. Water leaked into head and settled in several inches in shelf. Traced leak to deck stanchion mounting, reseated stanchion with sealer.

15. Main boom broke loose and pushed against mast shrouds. Traced fault to deformed retainer ring, changed arrangement and replaced ring.

16. Companionway door would not close against door jam. Realigned adjustable hinges on door.

17. Significant cracks appearing in seat locker. Determined cracks were not part of structural support of boat and delaying repairs to New Zealand or later.

18. Boom vang bail pulled from boom. Realigned bails to use spare bail for vang..

19. Dingy foot pump broke. Trashed old pump and commissioned spare pump.

20. Automatic bilge pump does not automatically shut off. For now, cycle bilge pumps several times each day and will seek repair in New Zealand.

21. Water filling spinnaker locker. Determined that drain is clogged with broken glass and easiest repair will be to replace drain with larger piping with parts available on board.

22. Faulty charging combiner keeps batteries combined even dur (Webmasters Note: the transmission cut off here)
